Redskins: Yes, We're Changing Our Name

Newser — Evann Gastaldo

The Washington Redskins will indeed drop the team name, but no word yet on the replacement. The team on Monday confirmed reports in multiple outlets—including ESPN, USA Today, and Sports Business Daily—that the name was going away.

It's not clear when the new one will be revealed, but the Washington Post reports that the preferred name appears to be snagged in a copyright battle.

Owner Dan Snyder, who previously vowed never to drop the "Redskins," has been working with coach Ron Rivera on possibilities.

The Warriors, the Redtails, and the Red Wolves are three contenders floated in a Richmond Times-Dispatch story.

The move comes after the team promised July 3 to launch a "thorough review" of the name. Multiple sponsors have urged the team to drop it out of respect to Native Americans, and some retailers have stopped selling merchandise featuring the name.

A new logo will also be needed; the team previously said it will stop using Native American imagery in its logo, though it will reportedly keep its colors of burgundy and gold.
