Military rec: Unit soccer league sign-ups open

The Fayetteville Observer, N.C. — Jaclyn Shambaugh The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.

Jan. 13--Registration is open for Fort Bragg's unit-level soccer league, which begins play in March.

Unlike the post's fall indoor soccer league, which is open to all Department of Defense ID cardholders, the outdoor league is open to active-duty service members assigned or attached to Bragg units. Teams must be organized by unit.

League play is scheduled for March 1 through May 11 and includes a round-robin regular season schedule and a postseason tournament.

Hedrick Stadium and Towel Stadium will host games weekdays from 6 to 9 p.m.

U.S. Soccer rules are in effect for all games, with a few exceptions mostly to keep game duration down.

Games are played in 25-minute halves on a running clock with a 5-minute halftime. This is full-field 11-on-11 soccer, and unlimited substitutions are allowed except in the final 2 minutes of play.

A tie at the end of regulation will push teams to three rounds of penalty kicks. If after those three turns of penalty kicks the game is still tied, play moves to sudden death penalty kicks.

More information about how to register, as well as a full rundown of the rules, is available through bragg.armymwr.com. The deadline to sign up is Feb. 21, and there's no cost to participate.

Alpha/Bravo golf

Stryker Golf Course will kick off the 2018 season with its annual Alpha/Bravo Challenge, a tournament that allows golfers a second chance on every hole.

The Alpha/Bravo is March 10 at 7:30 a.m.

The rules of the tournament allow each player to switch from the ball they started the hole with -- the Alpha ball -- to the Bravo ball, giving the golfer a chance for a better outcome on the hole.

Once a player brings in the Bravo ball, it must be used to finish the hole, for better or for worse.

The Alpha/Bravo Challenge is a quick-paced, eight-hole round of individual stroke play scored gross and net to crown a winner.

The tournament is open to the public, and the entry fee is $20 plus fees. To sign up, contact the Stryker clubhouse at 396-3980.
